Thanks Dude! I'd heard the bit about "man's infinite appetite for distractions" but never knew the context behind it until recently when I looked it while writing "'For you.' isn't".
Reading Brave New World back in high school, I struggled to see the message. If people were "happy" where's the dystopia? But being entertained without depth is like eating dessert without dinner. And we've got this big global machine that —thanks to certain financial incentives— does a really good job of preventing a large swath of humans from experiencing the full depth of their brief lives.
